Unilodge Kensington
This 10-storey development, designed by Nettletontribe Architects and built by Richard Crookes, provides students with an acoustically superior and visually refined environment for living, studying, and socialising.
To achieve this, a carefully curated selection of Decor Systems acoustic solutions were integrated throughout the building, chosen for their exceptional performance, sustainability, and seamless alignment with the architectural vision.
A standout feature of the project, expertly installed by Custom Ceilings, is the combination of Cewood wood wool panels and DecorSlat Max beams—blending natural aesthetics with high-performance acoustics.
Cewood panels are crafted from a simple yet effective mix of wood fibre, cement, and water, resulting in a lightweight yet highly durable material. Their open fibre structure enhances sound absorption, while the cement content provides strength, moisture resistance, and fire safety. This composition delivers an NRC rating of 0.80 and a Group 1 fire rating, making Cewood an ideal solution for spaces where both acoustic performance and compliance are critical.
Reinforcing its commitment to sustainability, Cewood holds GECA and FSC® certifications, along with an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD), ensuring minimal environmental impact.
DecorSlat Max beams, crafted from high-density MDF, provide a robust yet refined architectural feature that enhances sound control and visual appeal. In the reception and hallways, these beams are finished in SmartLook Tasmanian Oak, a high-quality timber veneer that mimics the natural grain and warmth of real wood while meeting stringent fire safety standards with a Group 1 rating.
Combining Cewood panels and DecorSlat Max beams creates an inviting yet high-performance environment where students can comfortably gather, work, and relax. Further elevating the Cewood and DecorSlat max combination, DecorStyle panels in SmartLook , Black Ash is installed throughout the building, adding a striking contrast that enhances the depth and character of the space.
Seamlessly installed by Custom Ceilings in the gym and workout rooms, Vogl perforated plasterboard plays a crucial role in delivering both acoustic performance and seamless design. Made from high-density plasterboard, Vogl is engineered to withstand high-traffic environments while maintaining a flawless, crack-resistant finish. Its precise perforations provide superior sound absorption, minimising reverberation in spaces where clear communication and noise control are essential.
Vogl meets stringent fire safety requirements as a non-combustible material and achieves an NRC rating of 0.85. Its sustainability credentials include EPD, GECA, and LEED certifications, making it a responsible choice for projects focused on environmental impact.
The music room features DecorZen, finished in SmartLook Tasmanian Oak, a classic yet highly effective acoustic solution. This panel absorbs up to 88% of incidental noise, significantly improving sound clarity and reducing unwanted echo. The SmartLook Tasmanian Oak veneer provides a warm, natural aesthetic while maintaining the fire-resistant properties required for compliance. Like the other Decor Systems products featured in this project, DecorZen aligns with sustainability goals, holding GECA and FSC® certifications and a Declare Label, ensuring transparency in material sourcing and environmental impact.
By integrating this carefully selected range of acoustic solutions, Unilodge Kensington successfully achieves a balance of design, functionality, and sustainability. Each product contributes to a thoughtfully designed space that enhances student life while meeting the highest standards of performance and compliance. This multi-spec approach not only aligns with sustainability goals but also supports local and national businesses, reinforcing the importance of quality-driven, responsible design in modern educational living spaces.
