Bundha/Fitzroy Gasworks Sports Centre
Decor Systems is proud to have played a key role in the delivery of Bundha/Fitzroy Gasworks Sports Centre, Australia’s first ever multi-level indoor community court facility.
Located in Melbourne’s inner north, this ambitious development forms part of the Victorian Government’s long-term vision for the Fitzroy Gasworks urban renewal precinct. More than just a sports hub, it’s a place designed to bring people together and promote wellbeing, inclusivity, and shared connection through sport.
The centre is co-located with the Wurun Senior Campus, creating a highly efficient shared-use model where students use the courts during school hours, and the local community has access outside those times. This smart integration makes the most of a limited inner-urban footprint while providing a much-needed space for people of all ages and abilities to participate in sport and fitness.
Bundha/Fitzroy Gasworks Sports Centre is spread across multiple levels and caters to a wide range of sporting activities and user groups.
- A ground-level futsal court
- A vibrant café and community lounge
- A welcoming entry zone
- A mezzanine level featuring a 24-hour gym and change facilities
- Upper levels housing four courts for basketball, netball, volleyball, and badminton
This innovative vertical layout maximises the use of limited inner-city space, while promoting active living and community connection.
With so many different sports happening simultaneously across multiple levels, managing sound was critical. From day one, the project team understood that delivering exceptional acoustics would be essential to the success of the space.
Decor Systems was engaged to provide a complete acoustic solution that could support the complex nature of the building. The brief called for an exceptionally high level of acoustic performance, with an NRC target of 0.9 in many of the key zones. This was one of the most demanding acoustic specifications we’ve worked with in a sports context, and it required a considered and technically robust response.
We collaborated closely with the architect and the builder from early in the design process and also brought in our own acoustic engineer to provide additional technical support and ensure that every product selected could meet both the performance and aesthetic needs of the project.
Over several months, we workshopped options with the team. We presented different acoustic solutions, supported by data sheets, samples, and custom acoustic reports. Throughout this process, there was an open dialogue with the wider team, a shared focus on balancing design, performance, and value.
We had a flexible and responsive approach to value management of the project. Rather than reducing scope or compromising on acoustic quality, we worked closely with the builder, architect, and acoustic engineer to ensure performance targets were maintained without compromising on design or delivery.
Transparency and teamwork ensured the project remained on track and is a key reason why we’re continuing to work with the same project team on three new future developments.
With all of this in mind, the final acoustic solution featured a large quantity of DecorZen, DecorStyle, and selected use of DecorEagle, all finished in SmartLook American Oak. This finish allowed us to deliver a consistent timber aesthetic across the project while meeting strict compliance requirements for safety and durability.
Each product used on the project is GECA-certified, FSC-certified, Supply Nation-certified, and Group 1 Fire Rated. Thanks to our SmartLook finish, the panels achieve the warm, natural appearance of timber without compromising on fire performance — a key consideration for a public facility of this scale and complexity.
Bundha/Fitzroy Gasworks Sports Centre sets a new benchmark for what’s possible when architecture, acoustics, and community come together. We’re proud to have been part of it.

Frenshams School recently underwent a modernisation designed by TKD Architects. The Two-court Sports Hall will deliver timber-sprung floors, competition and standard-size netball/basketball courts, change rooms and amenities, a canteen kitchen, reception, and storage space. Decor Systems was proud to provide acoustic solutions for this space with DecorZen Trend®. This is the perfect acoustic solution that integrates seamlessly into large-scale classical, contemporary or high-tech architectural design.
The criteria for the acoustics in this project included a 0.70 NRC Rating, impact resistance to allow for panels to absorb 'knocks' in the sports hall, a tight construction schedule and budgetary requirements. The innovative team at Bollig Design in partnership with Decor Systems were able to fulfil all these requirements. Custom coloured SmartLook laminate finishes were used to save costs (considerably cheaper than 2-pac polyurethane finishes) without compromising the acoustic or aesthetic features.
