At the core of this project are flexibility and adaptability, hallmarks of the design philosophy behind the new building. Architectus has long been recognised for creating dynamic spaces that enhance user experience and promote collaboration.

The design integrates open-plan areas, breakout hubs, and technology-rich spaces that allow for a seamless transition between lecture-style teaching and collaborative group work. Architectus envisioned a space that could easily evolve with the changing needs of students and educators, supporting everything from traditional learning methods to the most advanced digital teaching technologies.

This flexibility is embodied in movable walls, adaptable furniture, and state-of-the-art audiovisual systems that can easily transform the space from a lecture theatre into a series of smaller classrooms or open, collaborative spaces. This versatility ensures that the building will continue to meet the needs of USYD diverse student body for years.

The need for acoustics in the new USYD teaching space was crucial. In modern learning environments, sound control is vital in how students absorb information. With flexible spaces that can transform from lecture halls to small classrooms, controlling noise was essential to ensure clarity of communication.

The design enables multiple classes or discussions to occur simultaneously in adjacent spaces. Without proper acoustic treatment, the sound could easily bleed into neighbouring areas, disrupting the learning environment. To address this, Decor Systems collaborated closely with Architectus to assess the acoustic requirements and provide tailored solutions. The Contours of Country range was chosen for its exceptional acoustic performance, striking visual appeal, and meaningful storytelling.

The space can be subdivided into four primary quadrants, thanks to carefully positioned key elements on the floor and the dynamic movement of a theatrical curtain. Within these quadrants, up to six student groups can engage in activities with flexible arrangements that foster diverse learning scenarios.

Keisha Leon’s “Connections in Country” from the Contours of Country range was specified for its synergy with the design concept and the profound narrative it brings to the space. The panels, featured prominently on the bulkheads, create a sense of flow and connection. They symbolise the transformation and continuity of movement, echoing the ever-changing nature of Country.

To enhance acoustic performance, the design was reversed to increase the open-air percentage. The panels, finished in SmartLook Austrian Forest Maple, lend warmth and an inviting ambience to the room. To maintain the design’s fluidity and achieve a seamless, uninterrupted look, the panels were installed using the BJ2 Secret Fixing System.

The architects envisioned a concept that bridges the past, present, and future, perfectly aligning with Keisha Leon’s artwork: “As the songlines are created, so are the lines that shape Country. Ever-changing, moving together, connected by past, present, and future.”

This isn’t a traditional classroom layout—it’s a living, dynamic environment that shifts and adapts. The design responds perfectly to the fluidity of the panels, embodying its spirit without needing to alter the core concept. The Indigenous integration enhances the space, becoming the missing piece that completes this innovative and thoughtful design.

Moreover, the design promotes a sense of community within the building. By incorporating open, transparent spaces and comfortable, welcoming communal areas, Architectus has created a learning environment that feels inclusive and engaging. Whether students participate in a group discussion or work on individual projects, the building’s layout and design make it easy to connect and collaborate.

USYD's new teaching space represents a bold step forward in the evolution of educational environments. The incorporation of Keisha Leon’s “Connections in Country” artwork and thoughtful acoustic design demonstrates a commitment to honouring Indigenous culture while embracing the future of learning. This dynamic, adaptable space meets the immediate needs of students and educators and positions USYD at the forefront of modern, inclusive education.

Decor Systems is proud to be a part of this innovative transformation. We look forward to playing a vital role in shaping the future of educational spaces, bringing more projects to life that push the boundaries of architecture and design.
