Mudgee Art Gallery
The new Mudgee Art Gallery emerges as a sculpture in the landscape. The precinct is in the heart of the township renowned for some of the state’s most favoured wines and is situated along the scenic rolling hills near the Cudgegong River.
Following a competitive tender process, BKA Architecture won the tender to build the gallery which saw the refurbishment and expansion of the existing Victorian Cudgegong Chambers which was then combined with a brand new, state-of-the-art facility that comprises the tourism hub, the main exhibiting gallery, a café plus additional community spaces and resources.
Heritage characteristics have been maintained and are combined with modern elements to create what is now a focal establishment in the centre of town. Decor Systems were fortunate to be a collaborator on this landmark project.
Internally, DecorZen perforated timber panels were selected in a Burnie Blackwood and simple, white finish to ensure excellent sound absorption in the inherently quiet gallery setting.
White DecorZen works softly alongside the other design elements, while the DecorZen in Burnie Blackwood finish has become a standout design feature. The tonal variation of the Burnie Blackwood finish brings a lovely level of movement and texture to the space and feels appropriate in the context of the surrounding regional landscape.
With an initial design meeting in 2019, the project was extensive and involved much collaboration between Decor Systems, BKA Architecture and Hutchinson Builders, particularly in ensuring detailed elements, such as the skylight cut-outs, were executed perfectly. The installation speaks for itself.
Some of the Decor Systems team have been fortunate to visit the gallery since completion and have commented on the feel of the space. The acoustics perform to the high standard that Decor Systems is known for and of course, look beautiful too.
