Margaret Tobin Medical Centre
Designing modern mental health facilities requires a careful balance between safety and a warm, therapeutic atmosphere. The Margaret Tobin Centre expansion introduced a specialised 12-bed Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), where ARCH focused on creating a low-stimulus healing environment.
High acoustic performance was essential to manage ambient noise and reduce reverberation, helping support patient calm and wellbeing. Materials also needed to be durable, easy to clean, and non-institutional in appearance to create a safe, restorative space.
To achieve a soft, patient-centered aesthetic without sacrificing acoustic performance, Decor Systems supplied DecorZen® Micro acoustic panelling finished in a warm, welcoming Tuscan Oak veneer.
Engineered with thousands of near-invisible 0.5mm surface perforations, the DecorZen® Micro panels allow the rich timber grain to appear completely solid and uninterrupted from a distance. Coupled with our integrated DecorSorb acoustic lining, the system delivers benchmark sound absorption to drastically reduce noise triggers and foster a peaceful atmosphere for both patients and staff.
Our high-performance systems delivered:
Acoustic Excellence: Superior noise reduction across critical speech frequencies by pairing micro-perforation technology with high-efficiency sound backings.
Biophilic Calming Effects: The natural Tuscan Oak timber tones move away from cold, institutional aesthetics to ground the clinical environment.
Safety & Durability: A robust, secure installation engineered to meet stringent healthcare standards and strict fire compliance guidelines.
This project stands as a premier example of how thoughtful acoustic design can elevate healthcare spaces, proving that safety-critical environments can still look beautiful, warm, and deeply restorative.

The Canberra Hospital Expansion represents the largest healthcare infrastructure initiative undertaken by the ACT Government to date. It is designed to address both current and future health needs in the Territory. This landmark project, designed by BVN Architecture and built by Multiplex, features Australia’s first fully electric hospital building powered entirely by renewable energy. This innovative approach reduces approximately 1,886 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually, equivalent to removing 780 cars from Canberra’s roads each year. The new facility, which spans eight levels and covers 45,000 metres, includes a state-of-the-art Emergency Department, an expanded Intensive Care Unit, and enhanced Perioperative Services. Sustainability was a central theme throughout the project, with the Multiplex team utilising electrified cranes, sourcing a locally made low-carbon concrete mix, and repurposing or salvaging 96% of materials from the previous building's demolition. BVN principal Julian Ashton said the major expansion of Canberra Hospital will “unite healthcare and community in an environmentally-friendly wellbeing-oriented campus. Social Procurement also played a pivotal role in this project, with Decor Systems’ Supply Nation Certification significantly contributing to Multiplex's Indigenous Inclusion targets. Maintaining a serene and peaceful environment is crucial for the well-being of patients and staff in healthcare settings. Decor Systems was integral to the project, supplying a range of aesthetic, highly absorbent, and eco-friendly acoustic panels tailored to various acoustic needs. Waiting areas required acoustics that reduce stress, while reception areas required enhanced sound privacy. The selected combination of Arktura, Zen, Zen Micro, and Vogl panels effectively addressed these diverse acoustic and design needs.
The Satellite Hospitals Program (SHP) is the Queensland Government's commitment to deliver seven new facilities to support public healthcare delivery in rapidly growing communities across South East Queensland. Decor Systems is proud to supply all seven sites with a blend of products to achieve style and acoustic excellence.
