Green Glossary

We’ve listed some of the key organisations and phrases below.

The Australian Forestry Standard is an Australian, not-for-profit, membership-based organisation with a mission to promote sustainable forest management in Australia. It is a Nationally based Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification Schemes (PEFC) accredited scheme in Australia.

Chain of Custody

Chain of Custody for companies in the supply chain is a verified mechanism for tracking certified materials from the sustainably managed forest to the final product.

FSC stands for Forest Stewardship Council and this certification accredits forest managers, manufacturing companies, and controlled wood products that exhibit responsible consumption of forest products. FSC is an independent, non-governmental, not-for-profit organization and the certification is completely voluntary.

Green Building Council Australia is the body that rates the sustainability of buildings, fit-outs and communities through Australia’s largest national, voluntary, holistic rating system – Green Star. They also provide training and advocacy around sustainable building methods and materials.

GECA stands for Good Environmental Choice Australia and is a purpose-driven, not for profit that provides solutions for sustainable consumption and production.

Global GreenTag

Global GreenTag is one of the world’s most robust, trusted and widely recognised eco-labels. They independently assure that every product is fitness tested and certified under one of their two leading certification programs.

Green Star

Green Star is a robust, transparent and independent assessment process that certifies projects so that they can display the Green Star Certification Trademark. Only projects that they have certified can claim to achieve a Green Star rating. Projects that claim to meet the requirements of Green Star but are not certified are potentially in breach of trademark rules and may be accused of ‘greenwash’.

LEED, or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design is now one of the most widely used third-party verification for green buildings. Homeowners and builders pursuing LEED certification for their project earn points across several areas that address sustainability issues. LEED-certified buildings are resource-efficient, eco-friendly, and cost less money to run than non-LEED buildings. Plus, they incorporate tactics and technologies that make the building healthier for its inhabitants.

Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification Schemes is an umbrella organisation that endorses national forest certification systems such as AFS that have been developed through multi-stakeholder processes and tailored to local priorities and conditions.
