Highlights of Learning Enviornments Australasia 2018

June 4 2018

I had the opportunity to attend the 18th LEA conference in Sydney. The event was broken up with Keynote speakers, bus tours, and showcasing Decor Systems extensive range of products.

I would say one of the biggest highlights was the bus tours. Our first bus tour took us to OLMC at Burraneer. As a supplier of acoustic products, I don’t often see the project finished and being used; however, this tour gave me that advantage. The tour leader, Greg Isaacs director from Fulton Trotter, gave me the opportunity to give a five-minute talk to those present. As I stood on the stairs sharing Decor Systems history, I was surrounded by the carefully designed acoustic panels. Greg said to me, “It seems that Decor Systems as a company is growing from strength to strength.” I had customers come up to me saying, I can’t see any joints in your seamless plasterboard. I was more excited that I couldn’t see that, but evermore so hearing this from our valued clients. It was breathtaking to see how we made this building, plus hundreds more, WOW! It truly took your breath away. Customers commented how our VOGL made the library seem so quiet.

Second highlight was to see how schools have and need to change for the 21st century. It almost made me want to go back to school! All schools we went to have changed from single use classrooms to having several classes in one. Therefore, the need for acoustics in these rooms is critical in helping students achieve the academic best.

Third highlight was a Keynote by Claire Madden. She has written a book about Gen z. It was interesting to see the challenges, advantages, and different life Gen z will have to those generations previous. One comment that really got my attention is that we were told in school you need to work out your math in your head. Teachers would say, you wouldn’t be carrying a calculator around with you in your back pocket; however, with the introduction of smartphones, we now have a calculator in our back pocket. We need to be creating schools that will cater for the next generations. One keynote said we need to build our schools to last 50 years not just the integrity of the building but also the design and classroom layouts.

Bring on 2019 in Perth.
